There is more than you can see
Beni Altmüller
2012-2015
Artist Statement
1) 2020 is the year of the Japanese zodiac sign mouse. 2012 and 2013 I painted several pictures from the zodiac signs. My visit at the puppet museum in Tokyo inspired me to reflect about these symbols of luck and happiness. The mouse represents creativity. She is impulsive. 2) Obviously there is more than the world we are able to see. These other spaces are guarded by the ape. An ape always says what he means. 3) During my stay in Tokyo I was fascinated by the people coming and going all over the streets and the tube. It is like a surrealistic ballroom where humans act following some kind of informal choreography. 4) Behind the horizon means the other world.
The rules of then - now - after do not exist in the world behind the horizon. Humans are not able to understand how this secret world works, but nevertheless it exists. My impression is that this world is always present in Japan. It is part of daily life.
